Physical activity and mental health – development and evaluation of psychological measures to promote physical activity and mental health
The research project aims to use scientifically validated measures in sport psychology to (a) sustainably promote physical activity and (b) positively influence mental health. In a first step, factors are identified that make it difficult for people to convert exercise-related intentions into behavior. In a second step, based on the results of this investigation, interventions are developed that support the execution of an intended behavior. The interventions developed will then be tested for their effectiveness in longitudinal studies.
For the research project modern measurement methods are used. Physical activity is recorded using accelerometers, which enable an objective measurement of physical activity based on acceleration data. Ambulatory surveys are also carried out in form of Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMA), in which subjective data can be collected in specific everyday situations using a smartphone application. This data provides an insight into the participants´ everyday lives and thus promotes both the understanding of interrelationships in the context of the research object and the development of realistic interventions.
