18.03.2025 – Research Visit

Chris Englert spent a research visit at the University of Poitiers to discuss future research projects with his colleagues Nathalie Andre and Michel Audiffren ().


05.03.2025 - Meeting of the working group "Sport Psychology Rhein-Main"

On March 5th, the sport psychology departments of TU Darmstadt and 51ÁÔÆæ Frankfurt came together to report on current projects. The meeting included a series of exciting presentations and a constructive exchange on current challenges. At the end, possibilities for further collaboration in the region were discussed.


19.02.2025 - Participation in the „Sport and Exercise Psychology Intensive Course“

The "Sport and Exercise Psychology Intensive Course" was organized at the University of Thessaly in Greece from January 27 to January 31. Supported by the ERASMUS+ program, the course brought together over 50 students and 12 lecturers from across Europe. Participants from 51ÁÔÆæ included students Lisa Mundt, Lorenz Imhof, Tim Bellina, and Zoë Holland-Cunz, along with lecturer Julian Fritsch.

29.10.24 - Julian Fritsch appointed as Associate Editor

In September 2024, Julian Fritsch was appointed as Associate Editor of the journal Performance, Enhancement & Health (; IF: 2.9).

In addition, the institutional editors, the German Association of Sportpsychology (asp), have decided to appoint Julian Fritsch as “Associate Editor” of the Journal of Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology as of January 1, 2025 ().


11.10.24 - Sport psychology departments at the universities of Hamburg and Frankfurt intensify cooperation

From September 30 to October 1, a working group meeting took place at the University of Hamburg between the Department of “Sport, the Individual and Society”, led by Prof. Dr. Wanja Wolff, and the Sport and Exercise Psychology Unit at 51ÁÔÆæ Frankfurt. During the meeting, opportunities for enhanced research collaboration were explored.

Following a tour of the laboratory facilities at the University of Hamburg, current research topics and projects were presented by staff from both institutions. The productive exchange between the departments led to the decision to hold further meetings and intensify the cooperation.

The Sport and Exercise Psychology Unit is already looking forward to the visit of colleagues from Hamburg next year.


07.10.24 - Start-up funding

As part of the GRADE Focus Program Julian Fritsch has received start-up funding of 6000€ to support an application for a third-party funded project.


19.09.2024 – New publication

The paper “Football referees issue more yellow cards following VAR interventions – Mental, tactical, and performance considerations” by Chris Englert, Roy Samuel, Yair Galily (both Reichman University, Israel) and Itay Basevitch (Texas A&M University, USA) has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching (IF 1.5).


03.09.2024 - Phil Ljubic receives the Certificate for Higher Education Didactics

The Interdisciplinary Center for University Teaching and Learning (IKH) at 51ÁÔÆæ awarded Phil Ljubic the Certificate for Higher Education Didactics of the state of Hesse on 3 September 2024. The certificate programme, comprising 200 work units of 45 minutes each, is based on the standards of the German Association for University Didactics (dghd) and supports proof of pedagogical proficiency.

 


13.08.2024 – Chris Englert elected as associate editor

The institutional editors, the Federal Institute of Sport Science (BISp), the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the German Association for Sport Science (dvs), have unanimously decided to appoint Chris Englert as "Associate Editor" of the German Journal of Exercise and Sport Research from July 15, 2024 to March 31, 2027 ().

12.06.2024 - New publication

28.08.2023 - KIT and GU intensify cooperation

In a two-day working group meeting with Prof. Dr. Darko Jekauc's Department of Health Education and Sport Psychology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), possibilities for research collaboration and cooperation were explored. Following the presentation of current research topics by the department heads and staff, it was decided to collaborate more closely in the areas of infrastructure (in particular measurement technology), communication (colloquia and department meetings), congress contributions (joint working groups), data collection and research projects.


17.08.2023 – Lecture as part of the Social Processes working group

Sören Baumgärtner gave a lecture on "dyadic aspects of the coach-athlete relationship" as part of the Social Processes working group at the Institute of Psychology at the German Sport University in Cologne. The lecture provided information on current research, ongoing and planned projects, in particular with the German Volleyball Association. In addition, further arrangements were made in the context of the planned special issue of the Journal of Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology, which will be published together with Dr. Jeannine Ohlert on the topic of "Coach-Athlete Relationship".


21.8.2023 - New publication

Chris Englert, in collaboration with Fabienne Ennigkeit (Goethe-University Frankfurt), Juliane Stehle and Geoffrey Schweizer (both Heidelberg University), publishes the paper "Open Science in der deutschsprachigen Sportpsychologie - Eine empirische Analyse der aktuellen Forschungsstrategien" in the Journal of Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology.


19.07.2023 - New third-party funded project

Prof. Dr. Chris Englert and Dr. Fabienne Ennigkeit were provided with funds of approx. 65,000 € by the Hessian Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs as part of the "Löwenstark" funding line for the research project "Stress reduction through the integration of mindfulness-based training into everyday school life". 27.04.2023 – Research stay Dr. Suzy Russell

Dr. Suzy Russell from the Australian Catholic University spent a two-week research stay at the Institute of Sports Sciences at Goethe-University Frankfurt. Suzy presented her research on mental fatigue and mental recovery in several workshops, meetings and lectures.


18.01.2023 – Lecture at the DBV Convention

Lea Mülberger and Chris Englert gave a lecture on "Mindfulness in sport" at the annual convention of the German Baseball and Softball Association at the German Sport University in Cologne (DBV Convention). The lecture also covered the current BISp project on the effect of mindfulness-based training on throwing performance in Olympic baseball.

22.09.2022 – German Handball Federation (DHB): Research Prize for young scientists

Every two years, a jury of experts from the DHB Science Network awards a young scientist for theses that deal with the topic of handball. This year, the prize for outstanding theses went to Constanza A. Leibbrandt from Goethe-University Frankfurt. She wrote her scientific term paper in the field of sport psychology under the supervision of Dr. Sören D. Baumgärtner on the topic of quality management in handball training. In her thesis, she focused on the further development of the mobile application iQMsport (integrated quality management in sport) for the sport of handball. As part of the project, she conducted expert interviews with coaches, athletes and association representatives and developed concrete proposals for a handball-specific update of the app, which is to be rolled out in the near future ().

13.07.2022 – Successful disputation

Dr. Paul Ehmann successfully defended his dissertation on the topic "Perceptual-cognitive functions of team sport athletes - Assessment and Training in a 360 environment". We congratulate Paul on this great achievement and wish him all the best for the future!


05.07.2022 - Sport and Exercise Psychology Unit

As of 01.07.22, we are pleased to welcome three new team members: Phil Ljubic will focus on the intention-behavior gap in physical activity as part of his research (funding ELLVIS, EER Foundation). Helena Weiler will investigate the effects of mental fatigue on sport-related performance (TSG Research Lab funding) and Lea Mülberger will analyze the effects of mindfulness training on throwing performance in baseball (BISp funding).

Prof. Dr. Chris Englert has received funding of €40,000 from the EER Foundation for the implementation of the research project "Physical activity and mental health - development and evaluation of sport psychological measures to promote physical activity and mental health".

Prof. Dr. Chris Englert has received funding from the TSG Research Lab for the implementation of the research project "Mental Fatigue in Amateur and Competitive Sports". As part of the three-year research project, the effects of mental fatigue on various sport-related performance parameters are to be investigated.

29.05.2020 - New third-party funded project

The Sport and Exercise Psychology Unit will be working with Prof. Dr. Clemens Lorei (University of Applied Sciences) on a project on the topic "Influences of cognitive fatigue on police action". This project is funded by the Hessische Hochschule für Polizei und Verwaltung (HfPV) and a research assistant will be employed at the HfPV.

23.05.2020 - Theory prize of the Sport Psychology Section

At this year's virtual annual conference of the German Association of Sport Psychology (asp), Chris Englert was awarded the Theory Prize of the Sport Psychology Section of the German Psychological Society (DGPs). Chris Englert received this award for his research in the field of choking under pressure under cognitive fatigue.
