Your higher education entrance qualification (HZB) is your gateway to university studies. While the Abitur is the most common, there are other ways to qualify. Here are the different paths you can take to gain an HZB and start your studies at 51ÁÔÆæ.
With the general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur), you can choose any degree program at universities. You can obtain the Abitur through:

Hessenkollegs are adult education institutions that provide a pathway to higher education qualifications. Typically, they lead to the Abitur (university entrance qualification) in three to three and a half years, or to the Fachhochschulreife (university of applied sciences entrance qualification) in two to two and a half years. At Hessenkolleg Wiesbaden, a condensed program (school pilot project) allows students to achieve the Abitur in just two years.
Admission requirements:
You can enroll in a Hessenkolleg if you are at least 19 years old, have completed vocational training or have three years of work experience, and hold a Hauptschule certificate. Managing a household is considered equivalent to employment, and up to one year of unemployment counts towards work experience. Admission is granted after a review of prior knowledge and an advisory interview with the school administration. In some cases, a six-month preparatory course may be required.

A certificate of subject-specific higher education entrance qualification (fachgebundene Hochschulreife) grants formal access to specific fields of study at universities and universities of applied sciences. Typically, your certificate will indicate which fields of study you are qualified to pursue with the subject-specific qualification.
A Fachhochschulreife (university of applied sciences entrance qualification) obtained in Hessen or recognized in Hessen qualifies you for a Bachelor's degree program (tiered degree), but not for programs leading to a State Examination or Master's degree.

Applicants who have obtained the academic portion of the Fachhochschulreife at a Hessian school can apply for a study place and participate in the admission process. However, for final admission/enrollment, both the academic and vocational parts of the Fachhochschulreife must be presented. The school confirming the academic portion must issue this complete certificate, which must be submitted to the university in certified form by the start of lectures. If the Fachhochschulreife consists of an academic and practical part, the date of qualification is based on the last part completed. If this date is after the application deadline but before the semester begins (Winter Semester: October 1, Summer Semester: April 1), the qualification date should be indicated as June 1 for the winter semester or December 1 for the summer semester.
If the academic portion of the Fachhochschulreife was obtained outside Hessen, an application is possible if the certificate is valid for Hessen (see below).
If the general Fachhochschulreife obtained outside Hessen does not include a statement such as: "According to the decision of the Conference of Ministers of Education in the version of [date], this certificate entitles the holder to study at universities of applied sciences in all federal states of the Federal Republic of Germany," or if Hessen is not mentioned, you will need specific recognition for Hessen. This can be requested from the , Rheinstraße 95, 64295 Darmstadt.
An IB Diploma is generally recognized nationwide in Germany as a qualification for university admission.
To apply directly to 51ÁÔÆæ, your application must include both the IB Diploma and the recognition and grade conversion certificate from the relevant ministry. For Hessen, this recognition is handled by the Hessian Ministry of Education:
Applicants with an IB Diploma who do not have a recognition certificate from the ministry must apply via Uni-Assist. More information is available from the International Office at:
Anyone who has completed a degree at a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) holds a general higher education entrance qualification, regardless of the school diploma obtained prior to the Fachhochschule degree.
Please note that with a Fachhochschule degree, you are considered a second-degree applicant. For programs with restricted admissions, only about 3% of study places are reserved for second-degree applicants. For further information, please refer to the section on "Second Degree."
