Lottery Procedure

Lottery procedure for summer semester 2025

How the lottery works

If study places remain open after the regular allocation (both the main and move-up procedures), they're filled using a lottery system. Sometimes, applicants drop out before classes begin, and those places are also filled this way.

Remember: While applying automatically includes you in the move-up procedure, it doesn't for the lottery! If you want a shot at the lottery, you need to sign up for it.

You can see which programs use the lottery on this page. If your chosen program isn't listed, it means there's no lottery for it.

For some programs, the application deadline is just before the lottery's end. They're marked with an asterisk (*). For these, you can join the lottery, but it's unclear until the very end if the remaining places will actually become available. So, using the lottery for these is more of a "just in case" move. We'll keep this page updated.

The lottery for will be held . Please be aware that submissions via e-mail or postcard are not accepted.

Even if you haven't applied for a program before, you are welcome to take part in the lottery. However, past applications don't automatically enroll you in the lottery – you must register separately.

All successful lottery participants will be informed through both regular mail and e-mail. If the lottery has concluded and you haven't been notified, unfortunately, you weren't selected this time.

Additional guidelines to consider:

  • Only one lottery application is allowed per program. Submitting multiple applications for the same program will result in disqualification.
  • There is no need to provide documents like transcripts or placement certificates during the lottery application. Such documentation will be requested post-selection, during the enrollment process. However, failing to meet the necessary requirements during enrollment will invalidate your admission.
  • Only those aiming for a tiered degree program (Bachelor) with Fachhochschulreife can apply for the lottery. Programs culminating in a Staatsexamen degree are excluded.
  • Current 51ÁÔÆæ students should include their matriculation number, or if applying normally, their applicant number for the relevant semester. While this doesn't influence your lottery odds, it speeds up the enrollment process should you be selected.
  • If you are allocated only a major or minor, you must select a non-allocated counterpart upon accepting your place. The  provide a list of non-allocated majors/minors. For further inquiries, the Student Advisory Service is at your disposal.
  • For those eyeing the teaching profession: Lottery participation pertains only to Educational Sciences, not the specific teaching subjects. Upon winning a lottery spot, you'll be prompted to declare your teaching subjects. Bear in mind that some subjects in the teaching curriculum may have limited availability, meaning there may be no study places. The Student Advisory Service is on hand to guide you through these choices.
