1. Understanding scholarships

What Scholarships Offer

€ Financial support

Depending on the scholarship program, you will receive either a partial or full scholarship. A basic scholarship from one of the StipendiumPlus Förderungswerke, for example, is calculated on the basis of BAföG (max. 812 euros per month plus a monthly allowance of 300 euros for study costs). The Deutschlandstipendium, on the other hand, provides 300 euros per month and can be received in addition to BAföG.

+ Ideational support and networking

Most scholarship programs also offer attractive accompanying programs. From subject-related seminars to skills workshops, from peer project groups to career-related mentoring structures, you will benefit from offers that go beyond the financial and build networks for your future.

Misconceptions versus Facts

There are many misconceptions about scholarships that may prevent you from receiving financial and non-material support.

For example:

Misconception

Fact

Scholarships are only for the exceptionally gifted and committed or for those in financial need.
There are a variety of selection criteria, ranging from your respective field of study to religious affiliation to your parents' place of birth.
There are few scholarship opportunities.
There are more than you think! In addition to the 13 large

talent programs (µþ±ð²µ²¹²ú³Ù±ð²Ô´Úö°ù»å±ð°ù·É±ð°ù°ì±ð), there are more than 1,700 foundations in Germany. Many scholarship providers even have problems finding suitable scholarship holders.

The application process is complicated and time-consuming.
Often all you need for the first step is a CV and a letter of motivation.

Keywords

As you begin to research scholarship programs, you will come across certain key words that are important in determining your eligibility and preparing your application:

BAföG §8

BAföG stands for "Federal Education Assistance Act". Section 8 of this law stipulates who is entitled to state student support in Germany and the conditions to which it is linked (e.g. age limits on entry to studies, not exceeding certain income levels). As many scholarship providers receive state funding, they are bound to BAföG eligibility regulations when awarding scholarships, with the exception of special programs for international students.

µþ±ð²µ²¹²ú³Ù±ð²Ô´Úö°ù»å±ð°ù³Ü²Ô²µ²õ·É±ð°ù°ì±ð

The "Begabtenföderungswerke" (foundations for the support of gifted students) in Germany comprise 13 foundations that focus on supporting high-achieving, engaged individuals as part of the "StipendiumPlus" program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Each of these foundations has specific foci and target groups. Don't be intimidated by the word "gifted". Many students who qualify for and are a good fit for these scholarships wrongly assume that they are not!

Engagement

This is an important criterion for many scholarship programs and is often mistakenly associated only with volunteer work. Social engagement refers to any way in which you contribute socially, civically, professionally or politically - whether inside or outside the university. Active participation in student initiatives, student councils, sports clubs, art or music groups, tutoring or mentoring activities, religious communities or political initiatives all count as engagement. Academic and further acheivements

For many scholarship programs, academic acheivement is one of the most important criteria. However, this is not simply equated with a near-perfect grade point average. While grades often play an important role, they are always one of many criteria that are taken into account. And achievements go beyond the academic: they also refer to moments of which you are particularly proud - be it in the context of sports, a hobby or a challenging situation in which you have prevailed or excelled.

Sociodemographic factors

Scholarship providers are interested in your whole profile, including aspects of your experience or identity that could put you at a disadvantage. For example, they are interested in whether you are a first-generation university student, whether you have a migration background or have refugee status. All these aspects of your person are worth mentioning.
