Goethe Welcome Centre provides extensive counseling and support services for refugee and at-risk scholars at PhD and postdoctoral As a member of the international Scholars at Risk network 51ÁÔÆæ is committed to offering refugee scholars a safe environment for their academic work and a long-term perspective in Germany.









Services and Support

Goethe Welcome Centre supports refugee scholars who wish to continue or begin an academic career at 51ÁÔÆæ.

Counseling and support provided:

  • Visa and Residency Guidance: Assistance with legal questions related to visas, residency status, and work permits in Germany.
  • Orientation and Integration: Support with finding housing, registering in Frankfurt, help with administrative tasks, and information on insurance and banking services.
  • Research Funding Guidance: Information and advice on funding programs, scholarships, and financial support options available to refugee scholars.
  • University Infrastructure and Networking: Access to university facilities such as libraries, networks, and events to promote academic integration and foster new professional networks.      

15th-Round of the PSI

Philipp Schwartz Initiative: Support for At-Risk Scholars

51ÁÔÆæ is participating in the 15th round of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative, a program supporting scholars who face significant personal risks in their home countries.

This initiative, launched by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, offers at-risk researchers the opportunity to continue their academic work in a safe environment. German universities and research institutions can host these scholars through fellowships and receive financial support to facilitate their integration.

Funding Opportunities:

  • Fellowship Funding: Financial support for up to 24 months (extensions possible).
  • Institutional Support: A lump sum of €20,000 to assist the hosting institution.

Eligibility Requirements:

Scholars eligible for funding must:

  • Provide credible evidence of substantial personal risk,
  • Possess outstanding academic qualifications (e.g., a Ph.D., publications),
  • Have recently fled their home country or still reside there.

Application Process:

Only universities and research institutions in Germany are eligible to apply. Individual researchers cannot apply directly but should contact potential host institutions that can submit an application on their behalf.

The internal application deadline at 51ÁÔÆæ is February 2, 2024.
